I will preface this review by stating, I love everything that Showcase Miniatures does. I also cannot believe I am the only z-scaler out there that loves this kit. This is probably the best z scale structure on the market. It is easy to build. It is interesting. It is well executed and goes together perfectly. The instructions are simple. It is versatile. It lends itself to many kit-bashing/kit-mingling possibilities. The kit is meant (I think) to be a structure you'd find down South on some road on the outskirts of town. I made my build to resemble a filling station on the East Coast, near the shore. Fans of Bruce Springsteen will know who Ducky Slattery is. For those who don't, he was the owner of Ducky Slattery's Sinclair Station on Hwy. 9 in Freehold, NJ. As a teenager, Bruce lived next door to his filling station. In the summer he'd go out onto his roof to escape the heat and listen to the cars racing off in the distance...chrome wheeled and fuel injected....and to watch the comings and goings of Ducky's filling station, which was a gathering place in the town. He was called Ducky because he copped a line from Groucho Marx and asked anybody if "they wanted to buy a duck?" This is Bruce's story so I cannot attest to its veracity. I, however, wanted to capture the essence of it. Fred's One Stop was the perfect kit for it. It can be viewed by double clicking onto FOS and seeing my completed build. The build for this kit is right out of the box. I just followed the instructions and added my own details and decals. I began by priming all the walls on the sprues with Tamiya white primer. This also is the base color of Ducky's. The trim is Tamiya pearl lt. blue. Because this is z scale I find it is best to hold the window parts with a pair of tweezers and spray downward on them. This prevents puddling of paint in the openings. Generally I don't think it is a good idea to spray things this tiny on a flat surface. I also primed the interior walls since this structure is lit with 6 LED's and the interior is visible. The kit goes together in sub-assemblies. This makes it easy to pre-weather and detail the porch and convenience store before they are joined to the house. I added some plants, mailbox and doormat to the porch. It also has a porch light. Most of the decals are Microscale N products. Some are from model car kits. This kit was a lot of fun to build. I look forward to building their latest offering, Route 66 café kit. It will become a Joe and Nemo hot dog stand and live next door to Ducky's where I'm sure Bruce would have ordered a couple "all around." This kit also has possibilities for n-scalers who may be looking for a kit to use in a forced perspective situation. Then it could really be the last stop down the road for gas. I can see it now, fading off into the distance.
